With the saw he sawed logs the right length for a door. He sawed shorter lengths for cross-pieces. Then with the ax he split the logs into slabs, and smoothed them nicely. He laid the long slabs together on the ground and placed the shorter slabs across them. Then with the auger he bored holes through the cross-pieces into the long slabs. Into every hole he drove a wooden peg that fitted tightly.
That made the door. It was a good oak door, solid and strong.
For the hinges he cut three long straps. One hinge was to be near the top of the door, one near the bottom and one in the middle.
He fastened them first to the door, in this way: He laid a little piece of wood on the door, and bored a hole through it into the door. Then he doubled one end of a strap around the little piece of wood, and with his knife cut round holes through the strap. He laid the little piece of wood on the door again, with the strap doubled around it, and all the holes making one hole. Then Laura gave him a peg and the hammer, and he drove the peg into the hole. The peg went through the strap and the little piece of wood and through the strap again and into the door. That held the strap so that it couldn�t get loose.
�I told you a fellow doesn�t need nails!� Pa said.
When he had fastened the three hinges to the door, he set the door in the doorway. It fitted. Then he pegged strips of wood through the old slabs on either side of the doorway, to keep the door from swinging outward. He set the door in place again, and Laura stood against it to hold it there, while Pa fastened the hinges to the door frame. But before he did this he made the latch on the door, because there must be some way to keep a door shut. This was the way he made the latch:

Und jetzt wird noch erklaert, wie er den Riegel macht (es ist kein Schieberiegel, sondern so einer, den man hochhebt, der in so einer Kerbe einrastet), und eine sinnige Vorrichtung, wie man den innen angebrachten Riegel von aussen aufkriegen kann. Das dauert ungefaehr nochmal genausolange, bis schliesslich:

Little house on the prairie. Dieses Buch muss wohl die allererschoepfendsten Beschreibungen von Handwerkerei enthalten, die die Weltliteratur aufbieten kann. Aber ich finde das nicht nur interessant, sondern geradezu befriedigend. Die haben ihr ganzes Haus selbstgebaut, dann bauen sie noch einen Ofen, den Fussboden, graben einen Brunnen undsoweiter.
Aber dem Ding, dem Ding, dem Michael Landers da oder wie der heisst, dem nehme ich die ganze Handwerkerei irgendwie nicht ab. Der ist zu verdammt lockig.

Karla traktiere ich gerade mit Little House in the Big Woods, das ist der Starter dieser Reihe. Da erfaehrt man ganz detailliert, wie sie anbauen und ernten, ihr Fleisch in einem selbstgebauten Raeucherofen raeuchern, ein Schwein schlachten, Butter und Kaese machen, Ahornsirup und Ahornzucker gewinnen und ueberhaupt alle Arten von reizvollen Vorraeten anlagen. Es ist toll und toll. Allein davon zu lesen ist guerillamaessig empowering.
Farmer Boy, das dritte Buch, ist auch grossartig, das handelt vom Leben und Weben auf dem grossen Bauernhof, auf dem der spaetere Mann dieser Laura Ingalls aufgewachsen ist. Und dann gibt es noch mehr. Was fuer eine Chronik! Gutes, frommes, arbeitsames, indianerverdraengendes Amerika!
Das haben die Amis natuerlich in der Schule, Little house on the prairie fuer die Kleinen, und dann The grapes of wrath fuer die Grossen. Wahrscheinlich fallen sie ihnen damit fuerchterlich auf die Nerven. Das ganze bloede Internet ist jedenfalls voll von irgendwelchen Gradesaver-Pages, wo man sich Zusammenfassungen, Betrachtungen zum Symbolgehalt der Schildkroete und ob Casey eine Jesusfigur ist oder nicht runterladen kann.
Schade, das sind genau die Buecher, von denen ich auch sagen wuerde, die muss man unbedingt den Kindern geben. Aber man kanns eben nicht erzwingen.
